  1. A truly great book, even better than the extraordinarily good movie (Le Crabe Tambour). Pierre Schoendoerffer writes, unsurprisingly, much like Jean Larteguy; somewhat less verbose & journalistic in style, perhaps, but with similar subtlety and craftsmanship (not to mention subject matter). Schoendoerffer is of course much better known as a brilliant filmmaker, and deservedly so, but his skill as a writer is not noticeably less than that which he has shown behind the camera.
