    1. This book has absolutely gorgeous illustrations, befitting for a book where aurora borealis, the northern lights, plays a prominent role. I love how the pictures so wonderfully depict what it feels like to be so involved in seeing something of beauty and wonder. This is a sweet story of a mother who rouses her son late at night to bring him outside to see unusual, for that (unnamed) place, northern lights. Other neighbors are out viewing them too, and there’s a lovely sense of community. Some r [...]

Check out my blog Bookworms Unite!(bookwormsunitebookreviews)Winter is my favourite time of year; and that’s not just something I say because I’m Canadian! I really do love winter! I love the snow and the cold air. The hot chocolate and how it gets dark early. And anyone from a Northern climate will fondly remember snow days during the school year! [...]

    3. Under the Night Sky by Amy Lundebrek is a beautifully illustrated story of a boy, his mother and the night they break with routine to watch a rare display of the northern lights. The boy spends nights alone while his mother works in a nearby factory. But this night she wakes him up and invites him onto the roof. The sky is bursting with colors. Mother and son join up with the rest of the neighborhood for the experience. It shows that astronomy can be for anyone and everyone. Nature is there and w [...]

    4. The illustrations in this book are so colorful, and detailed. I love the way it really captures the text in such a powerful way. This book conveys an incredible message to the reader. It is about the mom waking up her child in the middle of the night to go look at the sky, as something is happening. You figure out at the beginning of the story that she is a single mom, and she comes home late. This can most likely be related to some of the students in your classroom. She explains to him outside [...]

    5. A rather heavy story of a mom who works nights getting home and bundling her kids up and taking them outside to join the neighborhood to watch the Aurora Borealis. The mother uses this time to bond with her child. The story seems more for adults and how to approach tween and teenage kids. Not a great read-aloud for younger kids as it's most likely way over their heads.
