Wij Slaven Van Suriname is een fascinerende mix van geschiedschrijving, aangrijpende proza, en polemische aanklacht tegen het contemporaine koloniale Nederlandse bewind waaronder Anton de Kom schreef. De Kom heeft een uitstekende introductie in de koloniale geschiedenis van Suriname geschreven, met veel aandacht voor opstanden en het effect van het Nederlandse beleid op de inheemse en zwarte bevolking van Suriname.     2. Een heel belangrijk boek, zeker ook voor Nederlanders. Het is goed geschreven en lijkt mede geïnspireerd door Multatuli. Hij citeert verschillende keren Albert Helman, citaten op p.19, op p.111 en op p.139/40. maar gebruikt ook zijn naam en zijn eigen als voorbeelden, op p. 70 (als Lichtveld).Nog een naam die ons pad blijft kruisen: Abraham Crijnssen veroverde fort Zeelandia dat door hem zo genoemd werd naar de provincie in wiens naam hij vocht. Elke pagina is pijnlijk raak in de beschrijving van de waanzin van een koloniale macht die in slaven handelt.In 1934 geschreven, maar zeer goed leesbaar en belangrijk als duiding naar huidige structuren in Suriname. Confronterend te beseffen dat de slavernij in Amerika nadrukkelijker in onze Nederlandse geschiedenisboeken lijkt voor te komen dan de beschrijving van de eigen gewelddadige praktijken. Verplichte kost voor iedereen die nog twijfelt over een helder standpunt in de Sint/Pietdiscussie. [...]

    4. Dit boek is niet te vatten in sterren. Ik heb dit boek tijdens mijn verblijf in Suriname gelezen waardoor sterk opviel hoeveel van de beschreven koloniale structuren nog actueel zijn. Zeker als je ook kijkt naar de toenemende spanningen tussen etniciteiten en religies. Het lezen van dit boek is noodzakelijk om Suriname te begrijpen.
