    1. Originally posted on The Book NymphoI knew Alice Porterman had heart when she risked her life during the influenza outbreak at Jolene's Texas ranch and helped tend to those afflicted. Now she's come back home to Boston to help her mother and sickly young brother. When she arrives, she discovers they've been unfairly evicted from their house. Alice decides she's going to take on Albert Donahue, the new landlord. In this short novella, there's a mystery with action, romance and heartbreak. Alice is [...]

    2. This was an enjoyable period novella that takes place in Boston and involves a dastardly landlord evicting a downtrodden family. The recently returned daughter confronts him and he is entranced. I especially liked seeing the many facets of Alice, who has come into her own with the genteel manners of a lady - usually. Any time she was on the page, I was delighted. Albert is drawn a little less evenly, but still this is a diverting way to spend a couple of hours. Winter in Boston with the family t [...]

    3. 3.5/5; 4 stars; B+Holly Bush's Crawford Family is a good short western historical romance series. If you want to read some connected books without investing years in a great long epic, check this out. (I'm not really into epics these days). In this novella, we see what happened to a secondary character, Alice, from Book 2. I enjoyed this story very much. Alice and her family and community are people of substance. We had strong hints of that in book 2 when we learned of Alice's role in Jolene's l [...]

    4. Alice Porterman is a proud woman, regardless of her meager upbringing. When she arrives back home to help her mother ailing brother, Alice is enraged to find that her family has been evicted from the apartment they have been renting for so many years. Apparently a new landlord has taken over and his agent says Alice's mother is behind in the rent. Clearly a woman of action, Alice seeks out the landlord and is more than surprised at what she finds, after being snubbed by the snide agent.Albert Do [...]

    5. Alice Porterman, Jolene Crawford Shelby’s former personal maid, goes home to Boston to help her mother care for her younger brother. When she finds out that her family has been thrown out of their rented home, Alice confronts the man who owns the property. What she doesn’t expect is for the very rich Albert Donahue to become fascinated with her. Can she really believe that such a man would be interested in her—a maid?Once again, Holly Bush has created fascinating characters who draw you in [...]

    6. Vikki’s MusingsI have read several of Ms. Bush’s novels, so when I agreed to participate in her Excerpt tour at the last minute, I was happy about it. When I found out that The Maid’s Quarter is a shorter novella, I decided to purchase it, since I found the book description interesting. This is a lovely tale of a young woman, determined to survive and rise above her beginnings.Alice Porterman arrives home from Washington to find her mother and brother evicted because a small portion of the [...]

    7. The Crawford Family saga is continued in this novella chronicling Alice Porteman's return to Boston to help care for her mother and ailing younger brother, Jimmy. Alice arrives at her family home only to be told by her neighbor that her ma and Jimmy had been evicted by the landlord for being a little short on the monthly rent. Alice finds the name of the landlord, Albert Donahue, and goes to his home, determined to get some justice for her family. After making quite an impression on the young La [...]

    8. It was 1893, on a cold winter day in Boston, when Alice returned home from Texas to find her mother and sick brother living in a church. Alice had been paying her mom’s rent for years, so she was furious to find that her mother and brother had been evicted.Alice suspected that her no-good drunkard father had played a significant role in making her mother and brother homeless. She surmised, that he probably pestered her mom until she gave in and gave him money, leaving her unable to make the re [...]

    9. This is a story about a ladies maid named Alice Porterman. Alice returns home to help her Mother and ailing brother. She finds they have been wrongly evicted from their home. The simple story in the hands of a master story teller, Holly Bush springs to life. You are in the pages of their lives. The characters emerge and are compelling. This novella is a must read. The entire Crawford Family Series is probably one of my favorite groups.

    10. Alice's story. She returns home to her mother and brother and had to deal with their threatened eviction.

    11. There always seems to be something missing from stories this length. Alice is a well developed character in this and of course coupled with the previous story I felt like she was complete. I was a bit bored with yet another women with low self esteem thinking she isn't worthy of a good man. Albert on the other hand wasn't so well developed, I felt the story was lopsided. The author gives just enough to know the character could have been so much more but just let him be nearly one dimensional. I [...]

    12. A lovely little novella about the former maid of Jolene Crawford. She has been given a salary and a gift of money, so that she may care for her aging mother and sick brother. But things do not always go as planned. It's kind of 'Pretty Woman' meets the late 19th century. Cute. A good book to give you a little lift on a cold night.
