  1. At my first Turkish cooking class at the SC Dialogue Foundation, they showed us a video of this author talking about tea in Turkey. So I hunted down her book, which came from interlibrary loan the same day as The Turkish Embassy Letters. In a feat of bizarre coincidence, Katharine Branning had written her book in parallel to the embassy letters, to the long past Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. Unfortunately, this format creates a bit of redundancy, and I couldn't help but feel that the language was s [...]

  3. Wow, what a disappointment. The reviews on this one looked quite intriguing: Letters written from a contemporary, a regular visitor to Turkey, to the historic Lady Montague, who had done the same 300 years ago. Only that the historic letters were elegant in style and highly informative in terms of getting a glimpse of the culture (and perceived differences). While Ms. Branning - sorry to say - achieved neither:Her eloquence is meager, to put it friendly. Her insights into the Turkish culture and [...]

  4. I know it's frowned upon but I gave up and didn't finish this book. The content itself is ok but I didn't enjoy her writing and especially her attitude: because she had traveled to Turkey so often she gave the impression that she was THE expert on that country and its people, better than any Turk could ever be. That bothered me. :(

  6. This book was interesting but it had a hard time to keep my interest all the way through the book. The format of the book is in the form of imaginary letters written by the author to Lady Montagu, another English-speaking woman who travelled to Turkey in the 3 centuries earlier in the Georgian/Ottoman/Tulip period. These letters are independent of each other so the book can be read somewhat as short stories, but the chapters are organized more topically than using a story and the whole book does [...]

  7. As an American woman who spent several years living in and traveling to Turkey, I was intrigued by the title of Katharine Branning’s memoir: Yes, I Would Love Another Glass of Tea: An American Woman’s Letters to Turkey. Branning, a fellow librarian, has traveled and researched in Turkey since 1978 and has a clear love for and affinity with the country. However, the book does not do a good job of showing that love. She tells about her love, she gives lists and details about different topics r [...]

  12. An absolute must read by my dear friend Katharine Branning :) The book is inspiring, funny, emotional and a definite page-turner.
