    1. Jake’s Last Mission is a fast paced novella that follows fifty six year old Jake Kavaliro as he journeys to meet the Mugdaran Emperor Kristark to explain an altercation. There is a contrast in this short work between the well-crafted and straightforward narrative and a fully realised universe with its own distinct races, myths and history. The author clearly has spent a great deal of time world building.I found this tale though, initially at least, a little difficult to get into. As well as bei [...]

    2. (Two stars on GR, 3 stars on .)I received a free copy of this story for an honest, non-reciprocal review. (Spoiler alert!!) Jake’s Last Mission is a sci-fi short story that has some interesting ideas, but doesn't quite succeed in fleshing them out or developing much excitement. The story centers on Jake, a humanoid captain of a star-ship who wins a space battle that he neither wanted nor started. By destroying the alien ship he has created the potential for a war between his people and the ali [...]

    3. I downloaded this book free from and found it an entertaining short read. The story is uncomplicated and fairly typical of the space opera genre as I understand it. Its strength is the main character who is a likeable spaceship commander on the brink of retirement. His actions in defending his ship result in a diplomatic incident with the Mugdarans. Jake’s character reminds me a little of Captain Kirk. There is life in the old dog yet and I can’t see him staying retired for long. We learn m [...]

    4. Jake’s Last Mission is a very short, fun, light read. Don’t expect convoluted plotting and high tension. It reads like the final book of a long running series, where the reader is already familiar with the world, and where wrapping up the main characters’ arcs takes precedence over the plot. It is like the first ever episode you watch of a space opera series on TV is the last ever episode. As far as I can make out, this is not the case, though there are other books set in this world. The bo [...]

    5. Jake is an aging star ship commander who is ready to retire. Unfortunately, he gets himself into a bit of trouble which may result in a war. His honor won't allow him to retire before he has seen the war through, so he must try to make amends before the situation gets out of control.Jake is something of an anti-hero, but I found myself rooting for him all the way. He gave me just a tiny reminder of Captain Kirk, with his libido still being intact despite his age. He doesn't tend to over-analyze [...]

    6. Even though Sci Fi is not one of my most favorite genre, I found "Jake's Last Mission" quite entertaining and engaging. The story starts dynamically and keeps the action going though the whole book. The main character, Jake, was well developed and I couldn't help but keep rooting for him until the end. However, I wish there was more description of the universe, surroundings, and characters themselves, especially in the beginning, because I had a hard time imagining things as I read. All the al [...]

    7. I was given this book in exchange for an honest review. This short story is a quick read. It’s about a guy named Jake, the human captain of a star ship who is about to retire after a forty-year stint. It felt like this should have been the conclusion of a series but I didn’t find any previous books written by this author with Jake as a character. The story is boring overall, nothing interesting happens besides a Mugdaran ship that shoots at them so Jake shoots back. There’s a bar fight whe [...]

    8. Jake’s Last Mission is a novella focused on a middle-aged spaceship captain who starts the story off by protecting his ship from a belligerent alien spacecraft and its crew. The aliens taunt and tease Jake until he has no choice but to fire back and destroy the ship. And now Jake’s crew is concerned that he may have just violated an intergalactic treaty in an attempt to “start a war”. The concept of this short novel is a good one, but the execution could have been better. There are three [...]
