    1. Marcus and Ty are just two ordinary brothers who find themselves in a strange place after they discover a strange extremely loud humming noise and brightly flashing lights one night in their basement in the middle of the night. When the noise and lights stop it is totally dark and silent. Soon they discover they are not at home, not even in their city, and worse yet, not on their planet!Spartanica is a well-written novel told from three points of view – Marcus’, Ty’s and Bellana’s – a [...]

    2. Spartanica (The Survivors of Sapertys), Vol. 1, is the strong opening to what I anticipate will be an engaging series of Young Adult books.Late one night, Chicago middle-schoolers Marcus and Ty wander into the basement of the house where they live with their Aunt Andi, and the world as they know it changes forever. Drawn through a portal to another planet, in another dimension, the brothers find themselves in the ruins of the city of Spartanica, mysteriously destroyed by events that affected the [...]

    3. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.Spartanica was a cute middle school science fiction book. It's been awhile since I've read science fiction, so it was good to go back into what once was my favorite genre. It's also hard for me to read middle school fiction because I'm constantly judging it with an adult mind, but when I let go and read the book with a middle schooler's mind, I totally loved this book. From the first chapter it was science fiction all the way, and I [...]

    4. I have mixed feelings on this book. On one hand, for me the opening was kind of rough – I felt it dragged on with too much talking (felt like in circles) and uses perhaps the most overused of all clichés in story beginnings which is the “dream” motif. So I had some red flags raised. However, once I let the story unfold and we see how all the elements begin to fall into place, I was able to forgive the dream (as it is important) and get used to the narrative banter. However, if I were an e [...]

    5. This high stakes adventure into a perilous parallel universe should have great appeal to boy readers and lovers of Edgar Rice Burrough's classic John Carter adventures or Riordan's Percy Jackson series My 13 year old son happens to be both. The author has a great concept of voice, and distinctly changes it between both of the characters of the brothers. I appreciated the fact that it wasn't quite the same when each of them spoke as I tend to find that annoying. Although there were times when the [...]

    6. I was expecting this book to be cool and a fun read, but it had so much more to offer. It had a tiny bit of the Chronicles of Narnia feel, a lot of fun Science Fiction elements, cool technology, and some great characters. Two brothers find themselves in a world they could never have imagined and it only gets more intriguing from there. The first thing that hit me when I started this book was how good the authorial voice was. The book has a very interesting approach to character and viewpoint. The [...]

    7. Book Review: Spartanica (The Survivors of Sapertys Book 1)There is something to be said about a book that gets into your head and lives there. Couple that with my adoration for science fiction and you have a book that is hard to put down.Author, Powers Molinar’s book “SPARTANICA” is a masterpiece of imagery and suspense. It follows two brothers swept into a world far from their own. This world presents clues to its location, and a surprise in store for the brothers about their own history. [...]

    8. This was my first delve into the SF/Fantasy genre of books and I have to say, what an impressive way to start. We pick up the story in a situation I can relate to, having an older brother with whom I didn't always get along but would, even to this day, be lost without. Marcus and Ty (Marconis and Tymaeus) begin a quest to find out who they truly are, catapulted back to another world, in another time dimension, which to most kids would be really freaky but to them, slowly becomes all too familiar [...]

    9. My copy was provided by Netgalley.Ty and Marcus are average thirteen year olds. Marcus is the older brother who always has to take charge. Ty is the socially awkward, hypochondriac, genius. There's nothing unusual about them except for Ty thinking he's gonna die every five seconds. But then one night they went into the basement of their aunt's house and the brothers fall through a portal to a whole different universe and they find themselves in the desert outside the ruins of a city called Spart [...]

    10. I give this book 4 stars! Great read for me, my husband and my daughter ~ and that says something! Check out the synopsis from Ty and Marcus Mitchell are average middle school brothers growing up north of Chicago until one night when they’re hurtled through an inter-dimensional gateway to a parallel world defined by its multiple moons and planet-wide apocalypse. As they struggle to figure out where they are and how to get home, the boys encounter refugees of “the last day” from the distant [...]

    11. This book is nonstop action-packed adrenaline. The author, Powers Molinar, did a fantastic job at keeping the reader on the edge of their seat. As soon as you think you have things figured out, there is a twist that keeps the reader guessing. I really loved the characters in this book. There are two brothers, Marcus and Ty, who are magically transported to a new world where they meet other young adults as they all try to survive the chaos and destruction that is all around them.I love the fact t [...]

    12. Just posted this review on my blog PriyankaReads - check out this and many more young adult book reviews and recommendations there.===Rating: 3.1 out of 5 starsGenre: Sci-Fi and FictionAge Recommended: 9 and upSpartanica was a good book. There were some extremely violent moments though, that I felt were unnecessary. The book was interesting as a whole, but in certain areas it could have used some more detail. This book is an ARC courtesy of NetGalley.--------------------------------------------Ma [...]

    13. So this story is told from 3 POV, Ty, Marcus and Bellana. The story starts with Ty and Marcus trying to figure out where the humming and lights were coming from. Then after they gain back their sight, they realize they are no longer in their basement anymore. After they wake up and are freed they are discovered by a group of kids that are on the run and searching for shelter. They get separated from the group and are rescued by Bellana after being bombed. The group of kids from Atlantis, the bro [...]

    14. A young adult novel full of fantasy, Spartanica is the first in a series that follows brothers Ty and Marcus as they find themselves transported from their average suburban Chicago home to another dimension. While there they discover a decimated world that may offer clues to some parts of their past and help rescue a group of children attempting to escape captors, with the help of some of the local creatures. Spartanica is a great read, even for adults, and I think it provides an intriguing seri [...]

    15. 4.5 starsWow…okay, this is practically an impossible book to sum up – SO much happens! To start off, the brothers are sucked into a parallel world (or is it a dream?) and they are racing the clock to save their fate. Twists and turns and unexpected events along the way challenge them and keep the reader invested in the outcome. Normally it would take me about a week to read a book this length, but I read this one in two and a half nights. I just didn’t want to put it down! There were some [...]

    16. Given To Me For An Honest ReviewPowers Molinar's book Spartanica (The Survivors of Sapertys Book1), is a book that is unbelievable. I am not really into science fiction/fantasy but his book is making me a fan. The way he writes this book is amazing. Each chapter is not just numbered but named. It is about two brothers, Marcus and Ty. Ty has a dream and that's the start of a fantastic story. This book is full of suspense, action, twists and turns and is fast paced. Be sure you are comfortable bec [...]

    17. When I first started reading Spartanica I wasn’t sure if it would be my cup of tea. I have a very wide range of books I read and enjoy, so the fact that this was billed as a ya/mg scifi action adventure didn’t scare me any (huge Percy fan here). But at first the narration seemed to be trying too hard for my tastes, and I didn’t like the frequent use of “you” where the author addressed us the reader. This is just not a literary technique I’m a fan of as it breaks the veil of disbelief [...]

    18. Spartanica by Powers Molinar was such an unexpected delight! At first I wasn’t really sure what to expect, being a woman in my late thirties and reading a book geared towards younger children. However, like Percy Jackson and Harry Potter, these boys (and girl- robot-etc) their charm knows no age limit. I thoroughly enjoyed the witty banter and cute dialogue and the challenges that kept springing up and keeping me glued to the pages. There is never a boring moment, although at times it did seem [...]

    19. Fantastic! I absolutely LOVED this book! I felt like I was practically a kid again and was so caught up in this world that Mr. Powers created at times I felt like I was there! The descriptions were believable (even for unbelievable circumstances) and the writing was very strong. I liked that the chapter beginnings had the characters names on it so we know who is telling the story, but at times it did get a tad confusing for me. There are a lot of characters in this book and at times I felt like [...]

    20. Spartanica is a well written, imaginative sci fi adventure book. Ty and Marcus are typical young brothers, who through mysterious circumstances suddenly find themselves on another planet. Here they have to band together with survivors of the troubled world in order to save themselves and to find a way home. Along the way they discover they have more ties to this odd world than they first suspect.I really liked how each chapter is from a few different characters perspective. The main two boys are [...]

    21. I really liked this book Spartanica by Powers Molinar. It was truly unlike anything I’d ever read before. However, and this might be just me, I always have a tough time following along alternating POV’s when done in the first person. So if I put the book down for a bit and start up again, sometimes it took me awhile to figure out whose head I was in, or I had to scan around. So people who dislike alternating POVS may not like this, as the chapters are pretty short so you are doing a lot of h [...]

    22. Sometimes you start a book thinking you know what to expect but then up being totally thrown for a loop. That’s how this book was for my. I’ll be honest—I expected it to be an “ok read’ and I didn’t have very high expectations. I was surprised how totally enraptured I was right from the beginning! The writing just sucks you in, but the unique and interesting characters (love SMILEy) and the tense circumstances that befall the crew just keep you hooked right until the end! Be warned, [...]

    23. As young children we all dream of having a great adventure. Well that is exactly what Marcus and Ty get though they don’t exactly go looking for it. Ty is awakened in the middle of the night by a strange noise accompanied by an even more unusual light show that seems to be coming from his basement. When he goes to investigate things get crazy. Him and his brother Marcus are essentially transported to another world. A world that is not only foreign in nature but dangerous as well. Struggling wi [...]

    24. I’m not one for recapping plots in my reviews (that’s what the book description is for), and honestly if I tried it would take a whole page! Ha! I loved that this wasn’t just a simple, dumbing down MG story that is cliché and overdone (really, how many more ‘chosen one hero’ can we take in this genre?) but instead, these are ordinary boys in extraordinary circumstances that grow and change and become extraordinary themselves (if that makes sense). I appreciate that the author thought [...]

    25. Writing a book such as this for a middle grade audience is a tough task – it’s difficult to really sound like a younger kid and have the narration ring authentic, versus having it sound like ‘an adult trying to sound like a kid’. However, in SPARTANICA- The Survivors of Sapertys, the author Powers Molinar succeeded in doing just that – convincing us of the authenticity of our young heroes and even giving different feels to each as the shifting Point of Views allowed. From the beginning [...]

    26. "Spartanica" is an action packed young adult science fiction novel. I was confused during the first couple of chapters because of all the bouncing around between the different point of views, but once I got deeper into the novel the bouncing around didn't seem to bother me. Powers Molinar does a great job of throwing the reader right into the action when Ty and Marcus discover the crystal orb in their basement. Once the orb is discovered a completely different realm is introduced with new obstac [...]

    27. It took me a few chapters to get into the rhythm of this book. But once I allowed myself to get really lost in the story of Ty, Marcus, Smiley, Bellana, et al, I was in for the long haul. The author is most definitely creative and in touch with younger adults- talking how they talk, thinking how they think. No easy feat. I admire how original the story was, how Powers Molinar took what is perhaps a familiar theme or element but completely made it his own. Props to the near flawless editing (I re [...]

    28. I love how captivating this story was. I am definitely going to go back and read this with my son who is incredibly interested in time travel and other dimensions The narration took a little effort to get used to but once I did it all made sense and simply "worked" for this story. I thoroughly enjoyed this story that kept moving, kept me interested and was incredibly well thought out. I don't tend to enjoy stories where I need to learn about a new world and cultures etc but in this book it worke [...]

    29. This was an interesting take on a post apocalyptic tale on an alien planet. I really enjoyed several of plot twists and was frequently surprised. The cliff hanger was so well handled, I wasn't aware it was coming until it was right there. Though the multiple view points tended to get a little frustrating and when names were mixed up it would make me pause to go back and figure it out.
