    1. Αχ Ελύτη μου, τι μεγαλείο είσαι This is a re-read. Actually i don't know how many times i've read this and how many more i will but i can only say that Elytis is gifted. He makes everything seem eternal, and human, and grand. He is grand. His words are greatness.

    2. The modern Greek language has provided a home and inspiration for at least three great poets: Odysseus Elytis (1911-1996), Yiannis Ritsos (1909-1990) and C.P. Cavafy (Konstantinos Petrou Kavafis - 1863-1933). Kostas Kariotakis and Giorgos Seferis are generally added to the list, but the little I know of their work does not have a comparable appeal to me. One must try to imagine the situation of these poets. In the face of a 2500 year literary tradition which includes some of the greatest works i [...]

    8. Two great Cretan writers: Kazantzakis wrote the novel Zorba the Greek and Elytis wrote the masterpiece poem The Axion Esti.

    9. The Axion EstiBy Odysseus Elytis -Religious, philosophical and esthetical expressions.I took the Ancient Testament from the shelf to read the Genesis in comparison. It seems rather plain in comparison.Elytis Genesis is a parody, highly imaginative, beautiful, colorful and humorous: “IN THE BEGINNING the light And the first hourWhen lips still in clayTry out the things of the worldGreen blood and bulbs golden in the earthAnd the sea, so exquisite in her sleep,Spread unbleached gauze of skyUnder [...]

    10. This is a great example of how music helps consolidate poetry in the mind. There are a lot of people in Greece today who can recite long pieces of this rather abstract and surrealistic work due to Mikis Theodorakis' setting it to music. Even my youngest aged nine can sing several stanzas. The popularity issue aside, this opus (somehow poem does not describe it's scope) plucks the chords of today's Greeks' souls. It speaks of the very specific and very necessary ideas of freedom, justice and brot [...]

    12. Wonderful book that is Elytis best! His lifelong search for meaning in life takes him on a journey through darkness & light. The allegorical title comes from the beautiful Greek Orthodox Good Friday Church liturgyIt is the darkness before the light & the likely basis for The author's Nobel Prize!A good companion to the powerful music of Mikis Theodorakis's powerful music of the same name.

    14. The Axion Esti is an incredible modern Greek poem. Genesis, Passion, and Gloria make up this outstanding work.

    16. Ah, foreign poets. Translating poetry is hard at the best of times, particularly with a surreal work that requires considerable cultural context. This edition of Odysseas Elytis' The Axion Esti comes with some notes at the back to attempt to relate the various references to non-Greek (or non classically-educated) readers, which might have been better-placed on the pages themselves to make the reading smoother. There's some quite fascinating language here, but much of the time I came away feeling [...]

    19. When someone asked Oddiseas Elytis to describe what he was thinking when he was writting he said that when he closed his eyes the picture of Greece came in his mind. The endless blue, the endless green, the sun. Described Greece as a blessed country and the ideal place to inspire of. And not just that, but all the authors of the same generation (the generation of '30 as they are known of) including Seferis, Thetokas, Venezis, Politis, Dimaras, Empeirikos, Terzakis etc.

    20. this is good poetry of course, but I can't really relate to itElytis tries to create a kind of humanist liturgy, reminiscent of Christian liturgy, but I think this neglects the quite real problems of meaninglessness of the modern world
